If there is a bus substitution that needs modifying, you can edit it on the Substitutions screen. Updating substitutions as soon as you know about the changes keeps the route data current and reports the replacement's route information to Here Comes the Bus, if you have that add-on app. (See the Here Comes the Bus website and the Here Comes the Bus Help documentation for more information.)

Note: This article covers editing a substitution on the new Substitutions screen, which was released to all Comparative Analysis (CA) customers in May 2022. For details about the previous version of the Substitutions page, go to Substitutions Legacy.

To update a vehicle substitution, follow these steps:

  1. Click  >> Substitutions.

The Substitutions screen will appear and show only routes/tiers that are/were affected by substitutions for today.

Both vehicles that have had routes/tiers/stops taken over by another bus (the original/default buses) and substitute buses (also called the target vehicles) will be displayed.
Note: For an explanation of the column headers, go to Viewing Your Substitutions.
  2. If the bus substitution you need to fix isn't entered for today, follow these steps:

    1. Click the From date picker at the top right of the screen and select the date of the substitution.

    2. Click the To date picker and select the same date.
Note: You can edit only a single day of a substitution. If it was originally entered for multiple days, you'll need to make any required changes for each day individually.
    3. Click .

The substitutions entered for the date you selected will appear.

  3. Find the row of the vehicle originally assigned to make the run. (You can sort or filter the Bus column if needed to locate it, as shown in Sorting and Filtering Column Data.)

  4. Click  at the far left of its row.
Note: You will only be able to edit the row of the originally assigned vehicle — NOT the row that shows the substitute bus.
The Edit Substitution screen will appear.

In both lists, tiers affected by substitutions will have  on the right.

  5. You can click  to see details for the substitution. (In the Original Vehicle list, this will show which bus has been substituted for the original, and under Target Vehicle, which vehicle the new runs were taken from.)

  6. To restore the default bus's assigned routes in their entirety (reverting all of the previously entered substitutions for it for the day), click Reset to Original Plan and then Yes in the Warning dialog box.

  7. To change a substitution individually (such as stop by stop), follow these steps:

    1. Expand the affected tiers in both lists (by clicking ).

Affected stops will also have  in their row and some of the following:
      •  will appear in the right list; this indicates that the stop has been added to the target vehicle's run. Also, the stop's row will be formatted as bold.

      •  will appear in the left list; this means that the stop has been removed from the original tier. In addition, the stop's row will be struck through.

      •  might appear in the left list; it signifies that this is a school stop that had to be added (copied) to the target bus's route.

    2. To move a stop from the substituted bus back to its original bus, click the stop name in the Target Vehicle list and then click .

    3. To add a tier/stop from the original bus to the substitute bus, click its name in the Original Vehicle list; in the Target Vehicle list, select the route/tier to which the run will be added; and then click .

    4. Repeat steps b and c for all the tiers/stops you need to move between the vehicles.

    5. If more than one bus is now planned to take over part of the original route, you can click  to the right of the Target Vehicle's drop-down list, select the name of the second substitute bus, and repeat step c.

    6. Repeat step e if you need to include even more substitute vehicles.

  8. After making all the required edits to the substitution, click  at the top right of the screen.
