If your organization has the Student Ridership module, you have the option to purchase the Rider Photos add-on feature, which enables you to upload your students' photographs and have them be displayed on the MDTs (mobile data terminals) for drivers as the students scan on the bus — or on the driver's mobile device, if you are using the CalAmp K-12 app to scan their boarding cards.

Setting Up Rider Photos

If you would like to use the Rider Photos feature, you'll need to follow these initial setup steps:

Note: Again, you must first have the Student Ridership module.

  1. Purchase the Rider Photos feature (either as an add-on to your current configuration or as part of an initial CalAmp K-12 implementation) via your CalAmp sales representative.

When your Rider Photos license has been activated for your account, you will receive a Welcome email that includes FTP credentials and details for our FTP site.

  2. Upload all your students' photos to the K-12 FTP site as follows:

    1. Make sure that the photos are in either JPEG or PNG format (with a .jpg extension or .png extension, respectively).

    2. Name each student's photo file using their school-issued district ID.

For example, if Sam Synovia's school ID number is 12345, his picture must be named either 12345.jpg or 12345.png.

    3. Obtain an FTP tool that is approved by your IT team, such as FileZilla.

    4. In the FTP application, enter "ftp.synovia.com" as the hostname.

    5. Type in the username and password provided in the Welcome email.

    6. Establish the connection (perhaps by clicking Quickconnect — this will vary depending on the type of FTP tool you are using).

    7. On your local computer's side, navigate to the folder containing the images.

The CalAmp side will automatically be directed to the folder dedicated to your account.
WARNING! Make sure to place the photo files directly into this folder in the root directory. DO NOT create any subfolders. If you try to place the files in a subfolder, an error will occur.
    8. Upload all the photo files.

Note: You will need to repeat step 2 at the beginning of each school year.

As new students move into your school district throughout the year, you can add them individually via the FTP site.

Viewing Your Students' Photos on the K-12 Site

You can see your students' pictures in CalAmp K-12 as follows:

  1. Click  >> Students.

    The Students screen will appear.

  2. Click  in the row of the student whose photo you want to view.
Note: If necessary, you can sort or filter the Last Name column to find the student as shown in Sorting and Filtering Column Data.
The Information for Student screen will appear.

The student's picture will appear on the right.

What Your Drivers See on the MDT

When the students get on the bus and scan on (or are entered in the manifest for Special Education Ridership), the drivers will see their photo in the Rider Information dialog box, similar to this:

The student manifest will have an icon to the right of each student's name (), which the driver can tap to view their photo and planned stops.

What Your Drivers See in the K-12 App

If your students scan in via the CalAmp K-12 mobile app, drivers can view their photos in a similar manner as on the MDT. When the students get on the bus and scan on (or are entered in the manifest for Special Education Ridership), the drivers will see their photo in a dialog box like this one:
