A location in CalAmp K-12 is a meaningful area in your organization, around which you draw a zone (the geofence boundary). For more details about the three types of locations (schools, yards, and landmarks), see Navigating the Locations Screen.

To create a new location for your organization, follow these steps:

  1. Click  >> Locations.

  2. Click  at the top right of the Locations screen.

The Add New Location screen will appear.

  3. Click the Location Type drop-down arrow and select the type you are creating (school, landmark, or yard).

Location Details fields will appear that pertain to that type of a location.

  4. Follow the steps below for the location type you are creating.

    School

    1. Type a name for the school in the Name field.

    2. Optionally, you can specify contact information for the school in the Contact Name, Contact Email, Contact Mobile Phone, Contact Phone, and Contact Fax fields.

    3. If your school district has the Here Comes the Bus (HCTB) add-on module, you'll need to click the Enable for HCTB drop-down arrow and select Yes if the school will be offering HCTB notifications to the parents.

If not, you can leave this at its default value of No.

    4. In the AM Bell Time field, type the time your school day begins (such as 8:00 AM), or you can click the time picker and select the hour/minute value.

    5. In the PM Bell Time field, type the time your school day ends (such as 2:35 PM), or you can click the time picker and select the hour/minute value.

    6. If you want the manually entered bell times (in the preceding two steps) to be used for arrival/departure times in reports and on the live monitors instead of the bell times from your route planning system (if you have one), click the Overwrite Bell Time drop-down arrow and select Yes.

If not, leave this at its default value of No.

    7. Skip down to step 5.

  • Yard

    1. Type a name for the yard in the Name field.

    2. Click the Type drop-down arrow and select one of these options:

      • Depot: Where you keep a group of your vehicles, such as a garage.

      • Parkout: If the vehicle is parked at the driver's house when not in use.

      • School: If there is a designated area at the school you also use to park your vehicles overnight.

    3. Optionally, you can specify contact information for the yard in the Contact Name, Contact Email, Contact Phone, and Contact Mobile Phone fields.

    4. Skip down to step 5.

  • Landmark

    1. Type a name for the landmark in the Name field.

    2. Continue to step 5.

  1. In the Zone Categories area, click the selectors of the zone categories in which you'd like to include this location. ( means selected, and  deselected.)
Note: For example, for a yard, you would select All Yards and/or maybe a more specific zone category you have created. All Locations will be selected by default and cannot be deselected.
  2. Click Set Geofence at the bottom of the screen.

The Add New Location Geofence screen will appear.

  3. To use the location's basic address, type it in the Address box and press Enter.
Note: You might have better luck with the Advanced option, which processes the parts of the address individually. To use that, click the Advanced radio button, enter the city, street, state, and zip code in their separate fields, and click Search.
CalAmp K-12 will find addresses that match what you have entered.

  4. If there's more than one result, click the address to show all the matches and select the correct one.

The map will center on that position.

  5. Click Add Area.

Your cursor will become a plus icon, and you'll use it to draw the location's zone.
Note: If you need to zoom in or out, use the zoom controls at the top left of the map. If you need to move the map after zooming, you can use the arrows above the zoom controls to move the map where you need it. If you’d prefer to draw your zone using a satellite image, hover over the Layers icon at the top right of the map and select Satellite. (To go back to the map image, click Streets.)
  6. Outline the area of your location by clicking its shape on the map.
WARNING! For a school location, make sure that you draw your zone where the students will be dropped off and picked up at school — NOT around the school itself, but the actual parking and unloading space.

Each click will place a small square on the map, and a line will connect the two squares.
Note: Make sure that your zone doesn’t overlap to the street; if it does, you’ll get a lot of unwanted and incorrect data, such as vehicles in motion on the street appearing to be in your location. You’ll want to try to match the actual area as much as possible, with a variance of 2 to 3 meters. The only exception to this is if your drop-off and pickup area is actually on the street.
If you need to remove the last point you made, click Delete Last Point.

You can exit drawing mode by clicking Cancel. To return to drawing your zone, click the Draw a Polygon button.

  7. To complete the zone, click the first point you made as your last point.

Note: If you need to modify the zone boundary, click Edit. Squares will appear on the lines of the zone that you can click and drag to fine-tune the shape. Click Save when you are done.
Note: If you need events in the zone to be returned with specific addresses rather than with the location's name, click Ignore for RGC (which stands for reverse geocoding).
  8. When you are finished drawing the zone, click  at the top right of the screen.

You will be returned to the Add New Location screen.

  9. Click  at the top right of the screen.

You will be returned to the Locations screen, and your new location will appear in the list.

  10. For a yard, your next step should be to assign vehicles to it. See Assigning Multiple Vehicles to a Yard for details on how to initially add all the vehicles.

For steps on assigning a single vehicle to a yard, see Assigning a Vehicle to a Yard.
