If you need an alert that isn’t included as one of our default alerts, you can create a new one. You can create an alert for anything you need to — such as for a vehicle sending out a diagnostic message or a warning about a low battery. And you can choose who in your organization receives the alert.

To create an alert, follow these steps:

  1. Click  >> Alert Admin.

  2. Click  at the top right of the Alert Admin screen.

The Add New Alert screen will appear.

  3. Type a name for the new alert in the Name box.
Note: For example, you might create an alert called After Hours Ignition, which will inform you if someone is operating your vehicles after the hours your routes normally run – such as if someone stole one of your vehicles late at night.
  4. Click the Alert Type drop-down arrow and select what kind of alert this is:

    • Comparative Analysis alert: For our CA customers, when the actual driven route doesn’t match the planned route.

    • Event alert: For notification of a certain GPS event, such as the Ignition On event in the case of the After Hours Ignition example.

    • Fuel Card alert: For questionable charges on a fuel card.

    • Hardware Anomaly alert: For GPS device problems.

    • JBUS alert: For vehicle hardware issues.

    • New Vehicle alert: When a new vehicle is appearing in the system (and therefore perhaps needs information added in Synovia).

    • Route alert: For route irregularities.

    • Route Import alert: When the route information didn’t come in correctly.

    • Vehicle Maintenance alert: When a vehicle is due for upkeep.

    • Zone alert: For notifications pertaining to specific zones in your area.

  5. Click the Event drop-down arrow and select the Synovia event this alert will be monitoring, such as Ignition On.

  6. Click the Priority drop-down arrow and select the level of importance for this alert: Low, Medium, or High.
Note: All three will include the alert in the list of alerts to be acknowledged. You can sort this list by priority level. (See Checking Your Current Alerts for details.)
  7. On the right, choose the days of the week you want this alert to be active by clicking their selectors. ( means that is selected, and  deselected.)

  8. To set a start and an end time for the alert, click the Start Time and End Time time pickers and select the new times. Or you can click within the fields and type the times. (In the After Hours Ignition example, you might select 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.)

  9. Choose how people will be notified about the alert under Delivery, as follows:

    • SMS: Everyone with the selected role(s) will be texted.

    • Email: Everyone with the selected role(s) will be emailed the alert.
Note: You can select both options or just one of them.
  10. Further down on the page (under Message), specify the alert message to be sent out, either by typing the message in the Message box and including the message codes you want by clicking their aliases or by clicking the Message Templates drop-down arrow and choosing a template (such as Full Message).

At first glance, the aliases may not seem clear, but the button labels explain what information will be specified in the message, such as <H> for heading, which means the direction the vehicle is heading.

The message templates tend to correspond to the alert type you chose. Full Message sends the complete information in the alert:

"The EVENT occurred on vehicle NUMBER at ADDRESS at TIME, traveling HEADING (direction) at SPEED mph," or, for example, "The Ignition On event occurred on vehicle 166 at 301 Main St., on 5/1/2019 at 12:30 a.m., traveling west at 5 miles per hour."

  11. In the Roles area, click the selectors of the roles you want to receive the alert.

Note: For example, for a vehicle maintenance alert, you may want to select Mechanic. For many alerts, such as the After Hours Ignition example, you’ll select Administrator. You can select multiple roles to receive the alert, as needed.
  12. In the Groups area, click the selectors of the vehicle groups that will set off the alert, or select All Vehicles if it applies to your entire fleet.
Note: The following figure shows the settings so far for the example of the After Hours Ignition alert.

  13. If the alert applies to only certain zones in your area, set those by clicking the Zones tab and then following these steps:
Note: If you don't specify zones, the alert will apply to anywhere on the map.

    1. Click the check boxes of the zone names in the Available Zones box (on the right).

    2. Click .

The zones will appear in the box on the left.
Note: If you add a zone by mistake, you can remove it by clicking its check box in the Alert Zones list and clicking .
  14. If you want to exclude certain vehicles or users from the alert, set those by clicking the Exclusions tab and then following these steps:
Note: If no exclusions are selected, the alert will be set off by all the vehicles who have its triggering conditions and will be received by all users with the specified roles.

    1. Select the check boxes to the left of the usernames to exclude in the Users box.

    2. Select the check boxes to the left of the vehicle numbers to exclude in the Vehicles box.
Note: Excluded users won't receive the alert, even if they have the selected role, and excluded vehicles won't set off the alert.
  15. Click  at the top right of the screen.

Your alert will be saved and will appear in the Alert Admin list.
