If you have received a CalAmp K-12 test kit, you can use it to test your hardware to troubleshoot issues prior to performing an RMA. To use your test kit to check whether an MDT-8W or MDT-7P is functioning, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that the magnetic antenna is outside, is pointing up, and has a clear view of the sky.
Note: Use a known working antenna for testing purposes.

If testing outside isn't possible, place the antenna close to a window.

  2. Connect the antenna to the type of LMU the mobile data terminal (MDT) you are testing is normally used with (attaching to the GPS and COMM connectors).

Note: Use a known working LMU for testing purposes or one that you've verified is functioning properly via the steps in Testing an LMU-3641 or LMU-4233 Using the Test Kit.
  3. Power the testing device via the accessory socket (the cigarette lighter socket) in the vehicle; vehicle battery (connecting the adapter cable's black clamp to the battery's negative terminal and the red clamp to the battery's positive terminal); or kit battery (making sure to flip the switch on the kit battery to the On position).
Note: If you are using the test kit battery, connect it to the testing device via the red cable to the black knob. The test kit battery will arrive with a partial charge; you can charge it if needed.

  4. Physically attach the LMU to the testing device.

If you're testing an MDT that is used with an LMU-3641, attach the LMU using the clips on the side.

If the LMU is an LMU-4233, attach it on the top of the device.

  5. Connect the power harness to the LMU and to the testing device.

  6. Snap the MDT you're testing into the cradle.

  7. Connect the MDT cradle to the test kit display cable.

  8. Connect the test kit display cable to Aux 2 for the LMU-4233 and to the Serial 2 cable for the LMU-3641.
Note: If you're using an LMU-3641, you'll need to use the 6-pin–to–5-pin adapter.

  9. Press the Battery switch.

  10. Press the Ignition switch.

  11. Wait until the LMU's LEDs reach a solid state (both the orange COMM and green GPS).

  12. For an LMU-3641, switch the Display Power from Ignition button to the On position.

For an LMU-4233, switch the Display Power from LMU button to the On position.

The MDT should power on, display "LMU connected," and then launch the Welcome screen.

The date and time should appear at the top of the screen. If you don't receive a timestamp, the MDT might not be fully charged, or there might be an issue with the CalAmp K-12 server or the quality of the signal.

  13. If you are using Navigation, check the version at the bottom of the Welcome screen; in order for Navigation to work, the software release number must include an n, such as v2024.04n.

  14. Log in using a known working employee ID. (See the "Logging In and Out" handout available for download at MDT Handouts if needed.)

  15. Make sure that the device can connect to GPS as follows:

    1. Tap the menu icon () at the top left of the screen.

    2. Select Diagnostics from the menu.

    3. Check the GPS value on the right side of the screen; this number should be two or more.

  16. If the MDT doesn't power up, display the Welcome screen, receive a timestamp, authenticate your login, or show at least two satellites (plus include an n if you have Navigation), you can submit an RMA as shown in Returning Hardware and Obtaining a Replacement (Performing an RMA).
