As a driver, you can use the K-12 mobile app to scan students on and off the bus, using one of the following methods:

  • Student boarding cards and a bar code/RFID reader: As students enter and exit the bus, if you have a bar code reader connected to your mobile device, use it to scan the bar codes on their boarding cards to mark them as on (or off) the bus. If your students have RFID cards and you have an RFID reader, they will place the card near the reader to scan on and off.

  • Student list: You can manually scan the students on and off the bus by selecting their name in the list of students for a particular stop and sending the scan to dispatch.

  • Create Scan by ID button: Another manual method is using the Create Scan by ID button to open a keypad that will enable you to type in a student's boarding ID number and send it as a scan to dispatch.

The steps for each of these is presented in the first three sections below. The fourth section covers how to mark all the students off the bus.

Using Student Boarding Cards and a Bar Code/RFID Reader

If you have a bar code/RFID reader connected to your bus's mobile device, you can use it and the CalAmp K-12 mobile app to scan your students on and off the bus by following these steps:

  1. As a student enters the bus at their stop, have them present their boarding card (or the Here Comes the Bus app's Bus Pass option — see Using Bus Pass to Scan On or Off the Bus).

  2. Scan their bar code ID using your reader (or have them tap an RFID card near or on the reader).

If the student is scanning on or off at the correct bus stop, the Authorized Rider pop-up will appear briefly in the CalAmp K-12 app.

If the student is scanning on or off at the wrong bus stop (but is a student on the tier), the Unplanned Stop pop-up will be displayed.

If the student is boarding a different bus than the one they are assigned to in the system, the Wrong Vehicle dialog box will appear and have these options:

    • Deny Rider to Board: Tap this if you are refusing to allow the student to board the bus (depending on your school district's policies).

    • Allow Rider to Board: Tap this if you have decided to let the student on your bus (again, depending on your school district's policies).
  • If the student has already scanned on your bus (and is attempting to do so again — or another student is, using the first one's ID), the Duplicated Rider dialog box will appear.

It has the same options as the Wrong Vehicle dialog box, Deny Rider to Board and Allow Rider to Board, plus a Rider Is Exiting option, just in case the student needs to leave the bus while on the same tier.

  • If the student is attempting to scan on with a completely invalid bar code (one that isn't in your district's system), the Unknown Rider dialog box will appear.

It has the same options as the Wrong Vehicle dialog box: Deny Rider to Board and Allow Rider to Board.

  • When students successfully scan on, your passenger count will be updated in the app. You can see all the students who have scanned on by tapping on the Home screen or on the Stop List screen (which you access by tapping the Home screen's  option).
