This article outlines best practices for the storage and use of mobile data terminal (MDT) devices. Proper handling, especially during holidays and summer breaks, will minimize the risk of return merchandise authorization (RMA) requests and ensure that your devices are ready for the next school year.

The Importance of Proper Storage

Extreme temperatures, whether hot or cold, can negatively impact the health and lifespan of an MDT's battery. By following these storage guidelines, you can significantly reduce the risk of battery damage and ensure optimal performance.

We recommend the following storage practices when your MDTs are not in use:

  • Use a temperature-controlled facility: Store MDTs in a cool, dry location with a consistent temperature between 50°F (10°C) and 77°F (25°C). Avoid storing them in direct sunlight, vehicles, or unconditioned spaces for extended periods, such as holidays or school breaks.

  • Do not leave them on docking stations: Disconnect MDTs from docking stations for extended storage periods. Leaving them connected can strain the battery due to continuous low-level charging.

  • Use no or minimal power: If at all possible, power off your MDTs completely when they are in storage. If some features absolutely have to remain active (such as location tracking), make sure that the battery level remains between 30% and 50% by periodically checking and charging them as needed.

Before putting your devices in storage, make sure to do the following:

  • Clean them: Clean the MDTs with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and debris.

  • Put them in a case or use a cover: Consider using protective cases for additional safeguarding during storage and transport.

The Benefits of Proper Storage

Properly storing your MDTs will provide you with these benefits:

  • Extended battery life: Following these guidelines will help maintain battery health and maximize its lifespan, decreasing the need for replacements.

  • Reduced downtime: Proper storage minimizes the risk of RMA requests due to battery damage, ensuring that your devices are operational when you next need them.

  • Improved performance: Healthy batteries deliver optimal performance, leading to a smoother user experience for drivers.
