The Time and Attendance (TAA) terms job type and job code are sometimes confused for each other; here's a quick definition of both to help:

Note: If you're confusing the terms employee type and job type, see An Introduction to Employee Types and Job Types for a more detailed explanation.

  • Job type: The category of work being performed, such as Regular Route or Field Trip.

  • Job code: An identifier your payroll system uses to differentiate the pay each job type should receive; each job type has its own code. The codes are often numeric in part, such as JT1.

A simple tip to keep the terms separate in your mind is to remember that a job type is how you describe the task being carried out in words, and a job code is a numeric ID your payroll company's database uses to process the pay that needs to be received.
