Bar code reader
RFID reader

If your bar code or RFID reader seems to be failing, before returning it to Synovia, first try the following troubleshooting steps to make sure that something else other than the hardware isn't causing the problem:

  1. Make sure that the reader is getting power.

  2. Check the reader's connection to the LMU (location messaging unit) or MDT (mobile data terminal).

  3. Try swapping out the nonfunctioning reader for a known working reader.

For bar code readers, check these as well:

  1. Try scanning other bar codes. If your scanner can scan other types of bar code symbologies but cannot scan your bar codes, check with your Synovia fleet advisor or project manager to see if your particular bar code symbology is enabled.

  2. Ensure that your bar codes are crisp and clear.

  3. Check that you have the correct start/stop sentinels on your bar codes. (For example, Code 39 bar codes require asterisk [*] start/stop sentinels at the beginning and end of the data string, such as *123ABC*.)

  4. Avoid glossy surfaces or glossy inks for your bar codes. A glossy black surface may be indistinguishable from a white surface to your scanner. Try photocopying your bar code and scanning the copy to determine if glossiness may be a factor.

If you've tried all these troubleshooting steps and the device is still malfunctioning, you can open a ticket at CalAmp K-12 Support Portal. (You can find more details at Returning Hardware and Obtaining a Replacement [Performing an RMA].)
